Commoning: a relation, a process, a way of being. Understanding the world, through a We¹

Fr 22 Nov 2024 14:00 – 17:00, Studium Generale Session - Gallery 3, KABK

In this fifth lecture and workshop of the Studium Generale Commoning Series of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK), we begin to experience commoning practices, of artists, designers, activists and creatives who are living and working in more-than-human communities.

This session is guided by Interactive / Design / Media teachers Lyndsey Housden and Leo Scarin, and is open to any visitor of the Joint Research Day.

We kick off with a short lecture that discusses commoning principles and reflects on the systems that emerge from commoning practices. Systems of collaboration and cooperation. Leading to relationships based on care, mutuality and sharing.

Following the lecture, the workshop invites you to experience commoning practices, of artists, designers, activists and creatives. We will bring into play, drawing, gaming and prototyping (sketching), in an attempt to trace the processes of commoning, and the relationships that enable it to develop and expand.

We invite you to warm up to the process of commoning, through a micro workshop based on exercises, games and techniques developed by the revolutionary Brazilian theatre practitioner, drama theorist, and political activist Augusto Boal. These embodied, collective practices were developed to help understand the social reality, to begin to change it.

For those who have joined the other sessions of the Studium Generale Commoning Series, please prepare for the session by harvesting and gathering your insights and inspirations you have collected before. The examples of artistic, design, activist and creative practices you bring, will become material that we will use in the session.

During the session we will develop a collaborative outcome that reflects on the potentialities of commoning, for the more-than-human community of the KABK and beyond.
