PhD Defence and Concert of Johannes Boer
You are cordially invited to the public defence by Johannes Boer of his research project entitled The Tacit Knowledge of Claudio Monteverdi.
On 28 November at 14h30, Johannes Boer will defend his dissertation in the Academy Building of Leiden University. The defence will be preceded by a presentation concert by the candidate and colleague musicians on 27 November at 20h00 in the Lutherse Kerk in Leiden. The presentation and defence will be in English.
The artistic research by Johannes Boer resulted in an opera that was produced after his libretto and dramaturgy by five composers, five singers, seven actors, and ten instrumentalists on period instruments. The opera title is La Tragedia di Claudio M, with a storyline that follows a dramatic year in the life of Claudio Monteverdi, from his Orfeo in 1607 to L’Arianna in 1608. The opera was performed in The Hague, Maastricht and Copenhagen in 2018, and a video registration is available on Vimeo.
The research aimed to investigate the circumstances and core of Monteverdi’s creation of opera in a modern sense, which, according to many of his contemporaries and posterity, he achieved most through his Lamento d’Arianna. A collective of composers guided by Cornelis de Bondt and advised by Johannes Boer composed new music to alternate with the early 17th-century works. Italian actors, specialised in Commedia dell”arte, contributed to embody the relevant historical knowledge. The realisation of the opera functioned as an essential probing tool for researching knowledge that had not been handed down as codified information, the so-called tacit knowledge that vanished with the death of its owner. Johannes Boer’s dissertation consists of a practical artistic project, and its argumentations that are intended to contextualise the decisions leading to an epistemological frame. It aims to contribute to enlarging awareness of the role of knowledge and creation in historical performance.
