FIXED FRAMES, LONG TAKES: NEW TAIWANESE CINEMA | film lecture 1

Th 10 Oct 2024 17:00 – 20:15, Lecture and screening - West Den Haag, Lange Voorhout 102, 2511 EK

Lecture by Erik Viskil, Lector FILM

Thanks to everyone for joining!

The subject of this year's first FILM lecture is about cutting in space rather than time. Through an analysis of the workings of the film frame and a reflection on the consequences of using long takes, Erik will show what characterises the influential New Wave in Taiwanese cinema, which emerged at the end of the last century. To do so, Erik takes a special look at two renowned Taiwanese filmmakers: Hou Hsiao-hsien and Tsai Ming-liang.

The lecture concludes with the screening of the 2013 Venice Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize winner Stray Dogs by Tsai Ming-liang (138 mins)
This critical film about capitalism, homelessness and memories of the world as paradise shows the Taiwan of a decade ago, in which we recognise many traits of our own money-driven society. The lecture will also feature excerpts from films by Andrei Tarkovsky, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Hou Hsiao-hsien.

We hope to see you there!

Film Lectures 2024-2026 is a Master’s series by the Lectorate FILM, Erik Viskil and Georgie Brinkman

In this series, we explore the principles of filmmaking through mostly socially engaged films and video works from different periods and cultures. In one year, we start with narrative fiction and eventually arrive at the documentary or beyond; in the next, we move from facts and reasoning towards acted fiction, but always with room for abstraction and experiment. The programme has practical, theoretical, historical, anthropological and political dimensions and invites reflection and debate. FILM is Frame, Image, Language, Movement.

Following sessions: 14 November, 12 December, 23 January, 13 February, 21 March, 10 April, 8 May
