We are pleased to invite you to Sound Up – Listening to Urban Transformation, a study day taking place on Friday 13 June (10:00–15:45) at De Besturing, Binckhorst, The Hague.

The Lectorate Music, Education & Society organizes Listening to Urban Transformation, a study day on Friday 13 June (10:00–15:45) at De Besturing, Binckhorst, The Hague. This special event brings together artists, educators, researchers, and urban thinkers to explore how sound can be a tool for collective reflection, policy-making, and creative learning in urban contexts undergoing transformation. During this event, the Sound Up team will share their provisional results from the research project Sounding Urban Places.

PROGRAMME:

10:00 – 12:15 Project Presentation & Methodologies

Presentation of the aims, methods, and early results of the Sound Up project, with contributions from the participating teams across the Netherlands and Sweden. You will hear about a diversity of collaborative research processes:

  • Sound walks, live streaming microphones, and collective listening practices.
  • Participatory maps, sound cartographies, and imagined soundscapes.
  • Interviews, school-based workshops, and concerts.
  • A transnational approach to sonic pedagogy and urban change.

To conclude the morning session, we invite you to experience a demo audio route for The Binckhorst, based on interviews and field recordings.

12:15 – 13:00: Lunch

13:00 – 15:45: Co-creation and participation through sound art practices – Group discussion

Group discussions on participatory methodologies and the role of sound artists in shaping urban futures. This is followed by an interactive session on the Stream Microphone, an experimental listening format designed to capture the unnoticed acoustic life of the neighbourhood.

Sound Up is a collaboration between Luleå University of Technology (main applicant), Royal Conservatoire The Hague (co-applicant), Leiden University, Soundtrackcity, I'm Binck, and Kluster. The research project takes place in the framework of Horizon 2020 and JPI Urban Europe and is co-funded by Regieorgaan SIA, part of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
