All Things Being Equal: Using Peacebuilding Tools to Make Joint Decisions in the Rehearsal Room
As a conductor of orchestral and choral music, researcher Taum Karni seeks to turn the rehearsal space into a community where each member of the ensemble feels a sense of belonging and the freedom to speak, create and develop. Her PhD project utilizes tools from the world of conflict transformation and peacebuilding in the rehearsal room, in order to create meaningful collaborations, based on the concept of shared leadership.
This workshop-presentation includes, next to a research presentation, a practical component, in which participants will be able to experience the joys and challenges of shared decision-making.
In October 2024, marking one year of the war in Israel and Palestine, Carmina Singers Ensemble created a performance for an art exhibition on the subject of transformative justice. Transformative justice means healing and reconciliation taking place after great social upheaval or trauma. Since the subject of the exhibition is political, personal and traumatic, the challenge was to find consensus among the singers about the project's message. The performance was co-created by the ensemble's singers: the ideas came from them, while the conductor served as facilitator using tools from the peacebuilding world. The presentation will focus on the ensemble's process of coming to a co-created, cohesive performance.
