Fixed Frames, Long Takes: New Taiwanese Cinema

Th 10 Oct 2024 17:00 – 20:15, Lecture and screening - West Den Haag, Lange Voorhout 102, 2511 EK

The subject of this first FILM lecture by lector Erik Viskil was about cutting in space rather than time.

Through an analysis of the workings of the film frame and a reflection on the consequences of using long takes, Erik showed what characterises the influential New Wave in Taiwanese cinema, which emerged at the end of the last century. To do so, Erik took a special look at two renowned Taiwanese filmmakers: Hou Hsiao-hsien and Tsai Ming-liang.

The lecture concluded with the screening of Tsai Ming-liang's 2013 Venice Film Festival's Grand Jury Prize winner

Stray Dogs (2013), 138 mins

This critical film about capitalism, homelessness and memories of the world as paradise showed the Taiwan of a decade ago, in which we recognise many traits of our own money-driven society. The lecture also featured excerpts from films by Andrei Tarkovsky, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Hou Hsiao-hsien.

Thanks to everyone for joining!
