Book Launch & Exhibit Opening - Listening as a Research Method in Art & Design
You are warmly invited to explore the latest edition of the KABK Research Practices in Art & Design initiative which, after its enquiries into Walking (2021) and Touching (2022), now focuses on how research is conducted through the practice of Listening.
On Thursday 4 April, in partnership with Rewire Festival, we will open an exhibit and launch a 240-page publication, with a curatorial performance by special guest Salomé Voeglin and a conversation with the project contributors in the KABK auditorium.
The KABK tutor at the centre of this project is the sound practitioner, Femke Dekker, also known as Loma Doom. Commissioned by the Design Lectorate, she has led a year-long investigation into how sounding and listening are currently engaged with by tutors, students and staff throughout the University of the Arts The Hague, and how they can be nurtured more fully, specifically in relation to art and design education at KABK.
The exhibit, A Listening Library for the (Speculative) Department of Sounding, on view in the KABK Research Display Space, is organised around a playlist of sonic artifacts and excerpts derived from essential theoretical texts, tracks, compilations, listening exercises, field recordings, and broadcasts. Each audio file on the playlist relates to a physical object displayed in the library and the exhibition visitor is invited to enjoy the resonance created between the acts of listening and looking.
The 240-page publication, designed by Niels Schrader and edited by Alice Twemlow, contains a rich array of essays, Q&As, and project reflections contributed by members of the extended KABK research community who have met and discussed the content at Research Clubs during the previous year.
