Workshop series: Ethics in Artistic Research
Florian Cramer, Miriam Rasch and Harma Staal (WdKA) are organizing a three-part workshop series on ethical questions among students and researchers, focusing on ethical attitudes and subjects that ask for ethical consideration. The workshops will form the basis for a poster that can be folded into a zine, that will be distributed to all participants and others who are interested.
The first workshop took place on June 4th at the Research Station of the Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam, and focused on ethical attitudes: what does it mean to have an ethical attitude within artistic research and how do you train it? Topics include intellectual property, ethical exceptionalism and integrity and positioning.
The second workshop on ethical questions within artistic research will take place on Friday, 3rd October, in Maastricht, organized in collaboration with the research departments of Willem de Kooning Academy Rotterdam and Academy of Arts Maastricht/MERIAN, with support from Platform Kunst ≈ Onderzoek. This workshop is especially for researchers (lectors, PD/PhD-candidates, teacher-researchers, MA-students).
After the first workshop, which focused on problematic attitudes learned in art education, the second workshop will engage with current themes in art and design that require ethical sensitivity and carefulness of the artistic researcher, including:
▪ identity and social/cultural marginalization
▪ trauma and (political) violence
▪ more-than-human ecologies
▪ artificial intelligence and human/machine interaction
▪ other themes brought in by the participants
The workshops will form the basis for a poster that can be folded into a zine, that will be distributed to all participants and others who are interested.
Date: Friday 3 October 2025
Time: 12.00 – 17.00 hours
Place: Maastricht (specific location tbc)
More information and program will follow soon. You can sign up for the workshop here.
