Jonty Coy

Jonty Coy is an Australian flautist, singer and researcher specialising in historical performance practices.

As a flautist, he has appeared with various early music ensembles throughout Europe including Ensemble Pygmalion, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, Luthers Bach Ensemble, Apollo Ensemble and Florilegium Musicum. As a singer, he performs regularly with Cappella Pratensis, Utopia Ensemble, Ensemble Cacophony, and other ensembles specialising in renaissance polyphony.

Jonty holds a Masters in Music from the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, and a Bachelor of Philosophy from the University of Western Australia. He is currently a PhD candidate at Leiden University's ACPA, for a thesis inspired by the so-called 'Warder' flute, an early-sixteenth-century instrument recently recovered from a Dutch shipwreck. His research explores alternative approaches to historical performance practice, informed by relational ontologies and material semiotics.

Jonty has been supported through his studies by Gandel Philanthropy and the General Sir John Monash Foundation, as well as Stichting NORMA and Stichting Eigen Muziekinstrument.
