Cyan Bae
Cyan Bae (b. 1993, KR) is a visual artist and researcher based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Working primarily with moving image, Cyan explores felt experiences and embodied knowledge entangled with socio-technical systems.
As a PhD Candidate at the Institute of Political Science, Leiden University, their ongoing research investigates the socio-political implications of algorithmic emotion recognition and deception detection technologies through filmmaking as a research method, as part of the Security Vision research project.
Their work has been screened and exhibited internationally, including International Film Festival Rotterdam and Nederlands Film Festival, with upcoming presentations at Visions du Réel and Jeonju International Film Festival. Their film Dear Chaemin (2020) won the Grand Prize at Seoul International Women’s Film Festival and the National Award at Leiden Shorts.
As a co-founder of First Cut, a film collective and curatorial platform, they organise and curate screening programmes around independent, radical, and experimental films, with experience as a jury member for Leiden Shorts and Movies that Matter Festival.
