David Verbeek (1980) is one of the most important contemporary Dutch filmmakers. He studied Film, Photography and Philosophy in New York and Directing at Amsterdam’s Film Academy. His films have been shown at numerous film festivals including Cannes, IFFR and Toronto Film Festival.

His is known, amongst other films, for his award-winning Full Contact (2015), R U There (Certain Regard, Cannes, 2010), and his highly praised debut feature Shanghai Trance (2008).

We are lucky to see a preview of David’s newest film before it shows in cinemas:

The Wolf, the Fox & the Leopard (2025), 120 minutes

This film is a dystopian story about Isa who has been found living amongst the wolves. She is brought back to a medical centre only to be kidnapped by a couple of extremists in order to build a new, purer world. A story about strength, faith and the ability to create an alternate reality.

Following the screening, David will be in conversation with Susanna Lindberg, Professor Continental Philosophy at Leiden University. In Susanna’s recent writings, she has studied contemporary subjects such as ecology, technology, and globalization from the perspective of continental philosophy. She also works occasionally on philosophy of art. Together, David and Susanna will discuss how his film acts as a form of philosophy that addresses societal and environmental urgencies of our time.

We have also invited a select group of students from the Philosophy department at Leiden University as special audience members. They will offer their insights, questions and reflections from their philosophical stances to stimulate our audience discussion and Q&A.

We look forward to seeing you there!
