Ned McGowan
Ned McGowan (Pittsburgh, 1970) is a composer, flutist, teacher, and researcher based in the Netherlands. His work has been performed internationally at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw, and the Purcell Room. As a performer, he specializes in the contrabass flute and has contributed significantly to the contemporary repertoire for low flute.
McGowan teaches composition and artistic research at the HKU Utrecht Conservatory, where he chairs the Bachelor’s and Master’s Artistic Research curriculum. He has also worked as a research coach and advisor at Codarts and Fontys. His artistic and research practice focuses on rhythm, temporality, speed, and intercultural collaboration. His PhD research, Speed in Music, was conducted within the DocARTES programme at Leiden University and the Orpheus Institute.
