Sound Up – Listening to Urban Transformation

We are pleased to invite you to Sound Up – Listening to Urban Transformation, a study day taking place on Friday 13 June (10:00–15:45) at De Besturing, Binckhorst, The Hague.

During this event, the Sound Up team will share their provisional results from the research project Sounding Urban Places. This special event brings together artists, educators, researchers, and urban thinkers to explore how sound can be a tool for collective reflection, policy-making, and creative learning in urban contexts undergoing transformation.

PROGRAMME:

10:00 – 12:15: Project Presentation & Methodologies

During the morning session, we will present the aims, methods, and early results of the Sound Up project, with contributions from participating teams across the Netherlands and Sweden. You'll hear about a diversity of collaborative research processes:

  • Sound walks, stream microphones, and collective listening practices.
  • Participatory maps, sound cartographies, and imagined soundscapes.
  • Interviews, school-based workshops, and concerts.
  • A transnational approach to sonic pedagogy and urban change.

To conclude the morning session, we invite you to experience a demo audio route for The Binckhorst, based on interviews and field recordings.

12:15 – 13:00: Lunch

13:00 – 15:45: Co-creation and participation through sound art practices – Group discussion

After the lunch, we will continue with group discussions on participatory methodologies and the role of sound artists in shaping urban futures. This is followed by an interactive session on the Stream Microphone, an experimental listening tool designed to capture the unnoticed acoustic life of the neighbourhood.

We hope you can join us in this day of shared inquiry, listening, and imagination.

Please confirm your attendance before 4 June via this link. Full programme details will be shared upon confirmation.

Warmly,

Team Sound Up (Paul Craenen, Marcel Cobussen, Justin Bennet, Renate Zentschnig, Irene Ruipérez, Stefan Östersjö and partners)
