Call for interest: researchers in film & music for collaborative artistic research on social cohesion

The lectorates FILM and Music, Education & Society, in collaboration with Filmhuis Den Haag, are preparing an application for an external artistic research grant. We are seeking a researcher-filmmaker and a researcher-musician/music educator to co-develop and, if awarded, carry out this research project.

The Co-Creation & Cultural Practices scheme, by the Taskforce for Applied Research SIA and the Cultural Participation Fund, supports practice-based research through co-creation with a focus on active cultural practice. Projects bring universities of applied sciences, cultural institutions, and practice partners together to address societal challenges, specifically within the themes of social cohesion and/or climate. In doing so, they contribute both to knowledge development around cultural practice and to new perspectives on pressing social issues. More information can be found here.

Our project will focus on the theme of social cohesion: strengthening connections and mutual understanding within neighbourhoods and communities in a time of increasing diversity and polarisation. The starting point of the proposed research is to explore the role of music in fostering social cohesion. Through the collaboration with Filmhuis Den Haag, film will be used as both method and medium of inquiry. Ideally, the research will be situated in practices within neighbourhoods or communities in The Hague or the Dutch Caribbean.

We invite candidates who:

  • Are employed by the University of the Arts The Hague (HdK);
  • Are interested and available to collaborate on developing the project proposal in the coming weeks, with the support of the coordinator of PARC and the lectors;
  • Ideally (particularly for the musician/music educator), can suggest a societal organisation as a practice partner to join the project and implement results.

If multiple filmmakers and/or musicians/music educators express interest, the lectors will meet with all candidates to assess which proposed angles are most promising in terms of feasibility, networks, and alignment with the aims of the grant.
