In the arts and in research in, on and for the arts knowledge formation and knowledge transfer take place via the body, the senses and via words and thoughts. The way in which this happens shapes not only our perception and understanding of the world, but also what is asked and what is found. In this year's edition of PARL-NEXT GENERATION, we explore the interplay and boundaries between gaining knowledge through the body, senses and words, and between theory and practice. We examine what scholarly and artistic research have in common, where they differ and how they can inform and support each other. By bringing together scholarly and artistic researchers in dialogue, we aim to discover synergies that promote understanding and innovation in their respective fields.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS

We would like to encourage artistic and scholarly researchers to become allies in making different ways of knowledge creation and acquisition explicit and accessible to others. We specifically encourage doctoral students and post docs to participate and cordially invite contributions from artistic and/or academic researchers with a focus on the performing arts (music, dance and theatre) that address the following questions:

• Research in, about and through the arts goes hand in hand with different methods of acquiring knowledge and different questions. How can a culture of exchange and mutual understanding be promoted? What are the advantages of combining academic and artistic/practical research? What are the challenges? How can one enrich the other?

• How to facilitate the inclusion of artistic practice in scholarly research and scholarly research in artistic practice? What are the reasons and benefits of connecting the two domains? How, for instance, do the senses contribute to our understanding of the world? Or how can we use measurements in our creative practice?

• How to develop innovative methodologies that emerge from research in, on, and through the arts? How to build theory through practice? What impact does it have on validity and integrity in research?

• How do we communicate knowledge expressed in the language of scholarly research or the arts to one another?

The symposium will include presentations, a poster session, performances, and keynote speeches by Prof. Dr Paul Craenen, Research Professor at the Royal Conservatory The Hague and University of Leiden (NL), and Prof. Dr Kendra Stepputat, Associated Professor at the Institute for Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (AUT).

Join us as we explore how scholarly and artistic research can enrich each other, increasing their collective impact and relevance.
